WHAT IS ILAAN?

ILAAN is a network of organisations and programmes providing probono services of legal aid and awareness across India. This is a joint project of the legal aid societies of various law colleges across the country.

What do we seek to achieve?

The impact of individual legal-aid organisations/programmes across the country is constrained by visibility, geography, and limitations of ideas and experiences that each individual group may face. In order to address this challenge, we envisage a national network of these groups working towards a common cause through co-ordination and information sharing.

We hope that this will afford each one of us greater visibility and ensure that public or potential collaborators can have easier access to student-run centres. In the future, the tie-up could be expanded to include activities like sharing of resources, for instance probono panel, legal awareness material, conducting legal aid training workshops for students involved in legal aid etc. While mutually respecting the autonomy of the individual centres, we seek to support each other in order to make all the activities conducted by these groups more visible, and collectively make ourselves more accessible to the public.

We do not intend to set specific project goals for any of the entities of this network. Instead of setting any specific goals for the projects that it undertakes, or the collaborations it facilitates, we intend to keep the process of future development of this network an organic one.

How do we plan to execute the idea?

We seek to follow a two-step process for ensuring a collective presence and inter-connecting ourselves. First, we have already created the Facebook group through which we can interact about the upcoming events, possibilities of future collaboration, etc. Thesecond step is that in order to ensure that people outside this network also get an easy access to the details about each and every organizations/programs involved in the network, we will be creating an ILAAN website which will be the first online platform with information about the these legal aid organizations/centres. Further, in this network, the organizations/programs need not commit to any particular project.

Why ILAAN?

There are many benefits of a collective online presence. We believe that first, this will help each individual clinic to get access to the relevant projects and at the same time, co-ordinate activities that we seek to carry on in the future.Further, this will also enable better co-ordination among these groups for the purpose of future conferences. Finally, apart from collective presence in the outside worldand information sharing among ourselves, this network also gives us an opportunity to make joint representations and policy suggestions for reforms in legal aid policies including the promotion of clinical legal education in India.

Launching the network

This gives us an immense pleasure to announce the launch of Indian Legal Aid and Awareness Network. We hope the journey that we begin on this day at the National Inter-linking Conference at Gujarat National Law University, Gandhinagar goes a long way in the successful integration of legal aid and awareness organisations and programmes. This conference provides us a brilliant opportunity to discuss the future course that this network should take, the organizational structure it should follow and other such details.

Organisations/Programmes that are currently part of this network

We also take immense pleasure to announce the institutions, which have already consented to be a part of this network:
